The DEVI

“Oh, dear, I’m amongst the lowly humans. I had to honour the task of saving them… a task not many can behold. Only fit for a few.”

As she let out a heavy sigh, tiny droplets of sweat fell off her glorious skin, feeding the dry patch of earth, quenching its thirst.  She had been floating on her grace since ages. Her image, her silhouette, indicated beauty in all details. She was soft, delicate, yet strong and thoughtful. Her posture divinely graceful and eyes full of love.

“I am the Devi, I float amongst these humans. I’m at the epicenter, making sure they don’t lose their centeredness. It can get tiring you know, but I’ve taken this honourable work upon myself to make sure they don’t make any mistakes. Even if I’m tired and fatigued, strength is what I distribute and morals are what I uphold. It gets tiring, being so giving, while floating at this height. Anyways, I’m okay to trade it with the glorious view of everyone from here. That's how i keep an eye on them all the time. Ah, I so wish they were able to take care of themselves. Anyways, I’m here guarding humanity, for humanity can dwell into darkness and someone with a pure heart was needed.

I’m the one who chose this mission or more importantly, The Chosen One.

Flattery is not for me, as I float and hover while making sure they proceed in much needed directions. Thus, Earth is saved from its doomsday.”

She seemed to have been speaking to herself, as being at the floating height, no one could hear her. She had to be continuously keeping vigilance, yet from far. Going too near meant losing sight of many, to look closely at only a few.“No way,” she brushed the idea the moment it arose and diligently continued her duty.

Her tired, vigilant eyes still beheld the twinkle of pride, as her ears heard the prayers sung by the weak humans.

“I’m holding everything together for them. I am the light in darkness.”

The seasons changed, she kept strong and then a gust of wind, a typhoon rather, shook her altar. She knew how to balance and this was yet another test for her. As her grace shook, her firmness grew.

“I am the Devi. I’m here to protect. I can’t wilt. I can do this.”

Her clean silhouette shook as she cried in pain and was lifted off her altar. The only thing she could do was surrender and believe she would land somewhere.

Reaching and being with humans was not what she wanted, but serving them also meant sometimes to be amongst the lowly.

“THUD” came the sound, declaring her arrival on the land of humans. She looked around as people flew past, like restless tides, unaware of the divine among them.

“Now I’ll reap the benefits of my hard work. Humans will hurry from every corner to aid me, moved by the very light I gave them. Ah, what a selfless work I’ve done.”

Hours passed, and she couldn’t move in agony.

“I might have fractured some bones or twisted an ankle,” she thought as tears gushed from her eyes, which were not dry anymore. She was shocked at the amount of water her eyes had been holding.

“This is meant to be a lowly human emotion, not for a goddess like me. Ah, I might be losing my powers. I need quick help.”

As she cried “Help!”, a few humans came and lifted her up,. They comforted and rescued her till she could breathe well. The medicine-man advised her to rest while some thoughtful ones comforted and fed her. As Days passed, she opened her eyes to the realisation that she had slept like humans. But damn, it felt good !!!!

Her body felt like humans and she almost looked like them. A smile embraced her face, yet a fear shook her spine.

“What’s different in me now? If I’m like them, what is my existence? Am I so ordinary? Have I fallen down so much to become like these lowly beings. How will i be able to look with pride in my eyes again?”

She hid her face between her palms, feeling frustration and anger.

Next, she felt a soothing warmth, a quiet sense of recognition, these were the hands that had been feeding her, taking care of her. And, as she opened her eyes, she saw her own reflection twinkling in them.

“Oh, I have so many aspects of myself which I’m seeing now. I’m meeting myself for the first time. I’m here to stay. I’m here to find myself in as many eyes as I see.

Maybe, I’m not so ordinary anymore.”
